All of Us Strangers: The film that got Dale to cry aloud at Cinema 21 with about 30 other gays....
These are some points you might consider after watching the film with an eye for Type 4 Themes.
Type Fours focus a great deal on the past, INTROJECTING (bringing inside themselves) relationships/feelings/experiences from the past.
Grief and not knowing how to move from it (Orpheus) can be a theme in the lives of Type Fours.
Intense focus on creativity, beauty, and an inner (preferred) fantasy life is also a theme.
Adam is a screenwriter… and in many ways this film is a gorgeous homage to that profession.
Harry asks Adam; How do you cope?
Has a longing for connection, has a grief from losing his parents, has a connection to the past.
Mom says she never knew what her son was ever thinking, he ran away a lot when he was a child (Type Fours along with 9s and 5s are first withdrawn in their general stance).
Adam and Harry are different ages (Adam came out during age of AIDS), Harry is younger; a gay man vs a queer man). The gay community can have a focus on being unique, what you are “not”, and how you are misunderstood. These are also prevalent Point Four foci.
***Loneliness** and longing is the theme if this movie (per director). My question is: Who is dreaming who up in this film?
Harry always felt like stranger in his family (common ugly duckling/mistaken zygote theme for 4s and for sexual minorities), doesn’t go home much bc he is gay. Adam is just starting to go home in this film and it’s beautiful.
Adam is given a chance to be understood by and to understand his parents.
Notice: The Pet Shop boys rendition of **You Were Always on My Mind** is important in movie. 4s/5s are often “thinking/feeling” about you. At Christmas we see Adam is getting a reenactment of his grief.
Richard Rohr says that Type Fours are the type who refuse to grieve (all the way to re-entry) bc there is a preference to stay in the withdrawn state. I believe this is true, it’s an Achilles heel for us 4s.
Adam’s parents ultimately say he cannot visit anymore, it is keeping him from moving on. (Introjection/Grief needs outside help to get back to NOW/RealLife.)
Keeping the dead alive has benefits and challenges, but is it for the benefit of the dead or the living?
Is Adam accompanying Harry like he accompanied his parents at end? Will this be the new introject/grief/fantasy-- or has something been freed?
I will be so interested to hear your experience of this film. Worth more than one watch…. as always. Do it for The Gays!
