Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Notes from Dale
Dare I recommend that you all *read* this very short book, which is filled with fun suspense and a bit of horror? It’s a short enjoyable read, so don’t miss it. The final chapter is about as Enneagram One “reaction formation” as you can get: making a case for who you should be and against who you actually are; or making a case against what you are desiring and then forming an identity against that desire... which all creeps out and eventually gets lots of power and forms what Helen Palmer called the One’s “trap door”.
Do not miss reading Dr. Jeckyll’s account, the final chapter. Not just One Perfectionist/Idealist/Reformers... *Everyone* can relate to fighting with less than desireable urges, succumbing to them, hiding from them, and often ultimately accommodating them. Want to tell yours to one-to-one partner or the group? Ok, we can speak in generalities too.
How do you think/feel/sense about Dr. J. What is the fatal flaw in our main character? Jeckyll’s urges? His *hypocrisy* and need for respect? His inability to reconcile and integrate his two/many selves? While seen in public and amongst his friends as upstanding, he *really wanted* to act out his vices and he lost himself to them, hoping not to pay too big a price. He wanted his pleasures w/o memory, reputation or consequences.
“Someday, Utterson, after I am dead, you may perhaps come to learn the right and wrong of this.” — Dr. Henry Jeckyll. Everything in the last chapter written by Jeckyll should be highlighted as what is attended to often by character Type One.
Remember that Ones are Reformers: Self-Pres Ones reform the home and nest, Sexual Ones reform their intimates and relationships, Social Ones *model* reformation by modeling appropriate behavior. But all of it is done not only with a view of the idea, but also a reaction against anything which is not the ideal. And as BODY/KINESTHETIC TYPES— THEY DON’T WANT TO MERGE OR TO BECOME WHAT THEY FEAR IS BAD IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT OR TO SHOW WHAT IS BAD IN THEMSELVES.
For the high side of one: Google/YouTube and listen to Bach’s “Wachet Auf” (Sleepers Wake)... Stand or walk upright while you listen to it. You’ll know why. A redemptive Type One can be found in Mark Salzman’s The Soloist which I recommend to you highly.
Don’t let the Ones or the One in You scare you... they are often just waiting for permission to come out and play. The trouble begins when they cannot find that permission from within.

Famous Quote: “Oh, Honey, No One is all that”
—- Dale Rhodes, Left-Handed (Latin, Sinister) Sage
* In what ways do you make a case against what you are experiencing/desiring?
* In what ways do you form an identity against what you really want or who you really are?
* What judgements do you make of Jeckyll? Do you resonate with his dilemma?
* What role does the "id" (raw urges for survival & pleasure) and the "super-ego" (inner critic & conscience) play in your life?
* Have you found that tension in other film/literature/art/culture?
* What are the high sides of our friends the Ones? Your own One side?
* Is there more you would like to know about them but were afraid to ask?
Additional Questions Related to Type 1:
* How do you make a case against what you really want?
* How do you make a case for what you don't want?
* How are you with pleasure?
* In what way have standards shaped your life?
* When has your own integrity become important to you?
* How would you articulate the principles that guide your life?
