Reflections for King Richard (film)
(Short Notes on a view into Type Three Themes)
Note common themes in Type Three Attention: Persistence, never stop dreaming, sales, success, overcoming obstacles.
High Values of our main character: Being in relationship, being a model for others to overcome failure.
Note the importance of showing Cinderella movie to girls: A common theme in Type Three attention is a “Rags to Riches” or “Riches to Rags” experience; but also a stressing of the values of humility and a clean heart. Notice the value to “Compete and be humble.” Notice what you are missing (4), Compete (3) but be Kind/Humble (2). This is high-functioning Type Three Values based on the Wings!
Type Three: The goal is to avoid failure— don’t be on streets w thugs.
Richard’s wife Oracene names his Type Three Achilles Heel— he thinks he’s the *only* dreamer, planner, worker. She accuses him of fostering dependency, “You’re scared you will fail.”— These are Type 3/Type 2 blindspots.
Type Three Psychological Defense Mechanism is named as Identification (you are what you are seen as): “You’re gonna be representing every little black girl on earth”… “Daddy… I’m not gonna let you down” the way his dad let him down. This prompts a sensitivity to avoiding failure and helping others avoid failure. Also: succeed and inspire.
“A Genius? A Huskster? We shall see tomorrow” the tv interviewer says of Richard. The theme of Self-Deceit is frequent in Type Three characters in film/books. Real footage in the film: Richard holding sign saying “Welcome to the Williams show.” 2s/3s/4s are the Identity Type— often viewing themselves as on stage and in the audience responding to comment cards :) This writer: Guilty as charged. Richard as Type 3: He envisioned everyone would be talking about their successes.
Former books/films used to explore Type 3 Themes:
Elmer Gantry (Sinclair Lewis)
Black Narcissus (Rumer Godden, use only the film noir)*
Talented Mr. Ripley (Patricia Highsmith)*
Pursuit of Happyness (Chris Gardner)*
Bad Blood (John Carreyrou… HBO’s The Inventor: Out for Blood)*
Born A Crime (Trevor Noah)
You Hurt My Feelings* (HULU)
