Martha (Netflix) and an Exploration into Type 1 Idealist Themes
Some general reflections...
- Think of them as "Idealists" and "Reformers", like Martha Stewart, Martin Luther, and Hilary Clinton.
- Conscientious, responsible, earnest, oriented to improvement
- Type 1 attention goes to error, standards, improvement and reformation
- A wish for Type 9-ish inertia to keep things moving well, and a Type 2-ish course correction when it goes awry
- An avoidance of Type 7 pleasure, which can lead to a Type 4 depression and resentment
- Ones have an inner law court through which their decisions must pass: they act as defendant, plaintiff, lawyer, judge, jury, executioner.... A tiring process that gets them through to a decision.
- High side: Integrity, Earnestness, Hard work, Hard play, Wit, Wicked Humor, Service, and a wish to be USEFUL. Think of a Type 1 Idealist as a 1-wing "service" mixed with a 9-wing "to all as is".
- Trap Doors in envy and misunderstanding (4) and lashing out to assert its freedom and insistence on autonomy (7)...
9&2 Wings= Repression of their own needs and desires.
- The Idealist: someone who sees the ideal and works hard to achieve it.
- The Reformer: someone who sees error easily and works hard to reform that which has gone awry
- Noble, Earnest, Hard Working, Hard Playing...when no one is looking!
- One slogans:
- TRIAD: Control. Autonomy. Territory. Force. Ones want to be self-controlled, rather than 8s who use excessive force and 9s who dampen their own force. Ones want a smaller territory but they polish it and reform it with their lives (and at their own expense)
- VICE: Rage, anger, resentment-- It's really anger at being angry.
- INSTINCTS: Remember that Ones are "Reformers"
But all of it is done not only with a view of the "ideal", but also a reaction against anything which is not the ideal. And as BODY/KINESTHETIC TYPES, they don't want to merge or to become what they fear is bad in their environment, or to show what is bad in themselves!
- Why does a One decide to be good?
- REACTION FORMATION:
EVERY TYPE can be viewed through the lens of Reaction Formation:
- The habit of attention for the One is ERROR and IMPROVEMENT. This leads Ones to an INATTENTION and eventually AN AVOIDANCE OF PLEASURE.
- TRAP DOOR - using the connection of Type 7, Ones may RATIONALIZE pleasure grabs (7) because they cannot take solely being at the service of their IDEALIZED BEAUTIFUL SELF (4) telling them to be good and to get themselves under control.
- CONNECTION TYPES:
- Four can be a score-keeper that no one understands how hard the One works: bitter, resentful, irritated, *descended royalty*
+ Seven can be an easy land of knowing that there are many ways to do things, and that pleasure can be SOUGHT rather than avoided.
- On the downside, Seven can be a negative connection in information overload and analysis paralysis so that Ones are never found to be incompetent.
+ Four can be a high side connection because it allows the One to enjoy beauty for its own sake, to enjoy themselves as beautiful, and to enjoy the beauty found in nature where there are no standards.
- WHY DO I LIKE ONES?
I also like their TENSION -- like a whoopee cushion, they are wound up, but once put under pressure, they can make everyone laugh if someone helps them loosen up and get to *pleasure*.
Like a "slinky", Ones can be wound up, but when let loose on a set of stairs, they are fun to play with!
I like their love of ORDER and BEAUTY, and their NOBLE WISH TO BE USEFUL, and their BEING ALIGNED WITH VALUES.

- Do your best
- Keep on trying

- INSTINCTS: Remember that Ones are "Reformers"
- Self-preservation Ones: reform the home and nest (i.e. Martha Stewart)
- Sexual Ones: reform their intimates and relationships (i.e. trap door show with Anthony Weiner and Elliot Spitzer)
- Social Ones: "model" reformation by modeling appropriate behavior (i.e. Hilary Clinton)
- The WING of NINE says that you are responsible for your environment, so be careful not to merge with anything that is distasteful!
- The WING of TWO says that you should be kind to others and that others are watching how you behave and perform.
- The answer to being responsible for everything (9) and needing to be good (2) is to be correct, be right, be competent, be in integrity --- not necessarily morally good; just working to meet the standards that they decide matter.
- REACTION FORMATION:
- Making a case against what you want
- Making a case for what you do not want
- All the while avoiding what your ID/your GUT says it wants/needs/desires
EVERY TYPE can be viewed through the lens of Reaction Formation:
- I should be this ___ so I will never allow, or be this ____.
- I am this ____; I am never that ___.
- The habit of attention for the One is ERROR and IMPROVEMENT. This leads Ones to an INATTENTION and eventually AN AVOIDANCE OF PLEASURE.

- WHY DO I LIKE ONES?
- Integrity; Earnestness
- The love of both beauty and order
- Often a wicked wit and *ultimately, a desire to be USEFUL* rather than right
I also like their TENSION -- like a whoopee cushion, they are wound up, but once put under pressure, they can make everyone laugh if someone helps them loosen up and get to *pleasure*.
Like a "slinky", Ones can be wound up, but when let loose on a set of stairs, they are fun to play with!

Dale's NOTES ON THE DOCUMENTARY
Opening Scenes: various quotes…
aspirational
you can have it all
a powerful force
“i’m always trying to fill a void”
the high standards of martha posed trouble for women, like homemaker porn
aspiring / inspiring
control freak
perfectionist…she says to that: “guilty”
She defends herself saying “I’m celebrating something (homemaking) that has been put down for years… a modern feminist.” She is comfortable in a defense mode about her decisions-- they are argued against and for on the inside, so when challenged she has a case already made-- this is common for Type Ones.
“Everyone thought she was perfect… but it was still something she was striving for and couldn’t rest until she got it.”
“I don’t want to put up with imperfections… but as we get older… something we can put up with.”
"Perfectly perfect perfect." Perfection: But at what cost?
She is asked first: What do you most dislike? NOTE the range of her answers.
waste, inefficiency, avoidance, impatience, people who think they can do more than that they can do, not paying attention to details, being mean just to be mean, aprons and house dresses. the color red.
“I was maligned for being a perfectionist… criticized for creating a lifestyle that was unattainable. Not at all. What I was really trying to do is educate.”. Goal of The One: To Be Useful. ie I have planted every tree you see (on her property). She says her company was a group of “Teachers”. Ones model appropriate behavior :) Notice also the cute story about happy for a year get married, happy for ten get a dog, happy for a lifetime get a garden: 1s 2s preach and teach in sweet parables that model standards of behavior.
Dead peonies: An eye for error and for standards of beauty.
Father: a frustrated perfectionist, mean, bigot, impulsive
She kept a written record of all her food, gardens, travel on her several months honeymoon. Pleasure can turn into a job.
On her honeymoon, she kisses a man in the church: she says neither naughty or unfaithful— she rationalizes the emotional space of the church and everyone should experience it.
Admits she is not a natural mother: Friends say: “chilly, not good at expressing emotions… ambitious to be somewhere other than where she was.”
Ones are good at carving out small spaces where they can exert control.
Wall Street Work:
“Martha was better than everyone at everything at the firm.”. “…whatever Martha can control it’s going to turn out fine. It’s whatever Martha can’t control that drives her crazy.”. “Martha doesn’t have failure.” She ends up being Too stressed, so moves to an unfinished farm house.
Ones: Often make a case against what they really want and they make a case against who they are —She made a case AGAINST being a homemaker to become a stockbroker to prove she could, then find she actually TRULY liked homemaking. Starts to be a professional caterer.
ONES HAVE TRAP DOORS INTO BASEMENTS YOU ARE NOT TO KNOW ABOUT: Watch her confusing rationalization that her “nothing affair” with an Irish man was not the cause of her divorce, it was that her husband caused the divorce. — I find ones tap into (7) Rationalization often to protect their self image of being right/good. I am (good right) I am not (bad wrong— or in this case the 9 Wing I am not the source of conflict or the 2 Wing I am not the unloving person)
Her personal stories were her marketability: she names it her Authenticity (4 Connection)
The Vice of Ones is Anger and Being Angry, aka Resentment. Suspicion of husband cheating on her produces ANGER, esp meanness to staff, but also SOMATIC Responses (1s are body types)—- pulled hair from her head, migraines, headaches… “so she was making everyone pay.” She goes back and forth from begging to threatening to burn the house down. “He treated me really badly… but I was like a swan: monogamous, admirable.” hmmm, really?
In speaking to staff she is curt, cool, direct, a bit pedantic and issuing warnings.
KMart: "Just because you don’t have a lot of money doesn’t mean you don’t have taste." This is admirable, seeing the NOBILITY in EVERYONE, and a great marketing strategy. She is an IDEALIST 1 and sees there is Potential 7 for Beauty 4 for and from Everyone.
She was persistent in a man’s magazine world— and succeeded. Speaker says “Beauty and perfection can be a powerful thing.”
She wanted the worst house on the best street in The Hamptons— to improve it.
She says she cares about doing and accomplishing, less so thoughts and even less so: feelings. This may be true of the Body Types 891: A Doing/Kinesthetic/Action-Oriented/Force Triad.
“Queen of Mean” A friend remarks:
“I’ve always been baffled by the degree of hatred that people have. I sometimes think it’s because she does something that all of us theoretically could do. She just does it way better. It seems to drive people up the walls.” People experience her and then feel like they are a failure, they may never make it. But Martha says: “But they might.”—- an idealist who sees potential (1). Her assistant: “Martha saw nothing but potential.”
A Fine Mess. When questioned about the pending case from the DA: “I just wanna focus on my salad.” But she was accused of Lying to The FBI. Lying is Rationalization, in this case to keep a self-standard of not being wrong here. She made a Grave Error: she was found guilty on all accounts.
The special seems to hint that (1) James Comey was prideful perfectionist making a point on standards. She didn’t see what she did was wrong, so she could not make a deal. Someone in the film remarks: “You always want to see little miss perfect fail.”. Martha is shown as abrasive, rude, demeaning to underlings.
VIDEO Moment: Notice at 1hr:18…. she does what 1s do. She says that the press has made me as someone I AM NOT. Then she tells you that all these good things is who SHE REALLY IS. Notice her anger at having to “pussyfoot around nitwits”—- I always say Ones live in a world where someone is going to be found to be an idiot, and they are preemptively planning to both be accused and accuser at the same time. Notice the *anger* behind the teacup criticism (a good point she makes tho) and cutting big oranges w a “stupid/little” knife.
Prison (and illness, death, sex)—- are the ultimate giving up of Control. “I had to keep my esteem, and my sense of myself as a good person… and crawl out of a fucking hole.” She becomes Congenial and Collegial with fellow inmates who have entrepreneurial dreams. “I cannot be destroyed” rings to what I know of Ones, Eights, Nines: who all hold a greater fear of being annihilated than the rest of us.
“If she controls, it all goes well.”
She has 2 Mottos: “Learn something new every day. When you’re through changing, you’re through.” High value for 1s: Improvement.
“I have always looked for voids. What can I do to fill those voids?”. 4s notice what is missing…7s notice what could be… 1-4-7 Harmonic Triangle is all over this content.
Is this a (Fallen then Redeemed) SP One? I think so! (She may be secondarily Social, bc of her skills in managing corporate life. She did not seem confident, skilled or lucky in One-to-One Love...)
