A Look at Type 1 Themes: Perfection, Error, Standards, Repression of Authentic Feelings/Desires...

Ove finds the best roses and argues that the 2 for 1 coupon price is “wrong”... he also scolds a woman who attempted to get in line before him.

He fixes mistakes in the recycling and mumbles “good for nothings”...

Patrick and the Persian in the driveway making errors in driving gets him to halt his own suicide: he is useful and then scolds them....

Flashback Childhood: The child Ove finds a wallet and his father tells him it’s his choice: he turns it in... honesty and integrity can be high values for Ones.

His father is a widower who is “too kind” and he wonders in retrospect what man can be “too kind?"  His dad is killed while celebrating Ove’s good grades.

You get a sense of his loss: his wife, his friend Rune who has had a stroke and lives across the way but is paralyzed (and he is holding a grudge about), his mother died early, father died when in teens; his job which was his the day his dad died.

Ove attempts to return the overpayment the company made when his dad died: the right thing to do.

“Fate is the result of the total of our stupidity”

“I’M NOT YOUR OLD MAN, Asshole, I’M AN ANGRY MAN.” Jumps out and physically threatens . When a driver beeps repeatedly at Parvenah’s driving.

He then bolsters and scolds her to drive: telling her she has done everything as an immigrant and can do this (drive).

He frequently calls people IDIOTS. (One)

His years of judgement about Rune’s choice of cars, and his board-chair win grudge keeps him from Rune.

His trap-door of pleasure: Really good SAABS

“Nit-picking obstructionist”

Admitting you were wrong is hard.. especially when you’ve been wrong for a long time.. he says to his wife’s gravestone.

He says he learned to use his anger constructively after Sonja’s accident, supporting her studies and building a new home for her.  “She fought for everything that was good.”

Additional Type One Points to consider from A Man Called Ove:

The frequency of how things are viewed, judged, completed “on principle”.
The world is viewed as filled with lazy and self employed people who have low standards.
A One feels they need to be in charge or it all falls to incompetency.
There is a fear of falling into 9 Inertia/Laziness, and yet the One’s rigid habits ( SAAB and clothes and paths ) are a form of inertia.
Vice of the Enneagram One: Anger/Resentment
Avoidance: Pleasure/ID
Attention: To standards and error
Defense Mechanism of the Enneagram One: Reaction Formation— forming an  identity AGAINST what you really want, or FOR something you don’t want, on principle:  Is Ove Anti-Audi or Pro-Saab?
For an Enneagram One:  What is valued? That which is useful.  The way to “matter”and “explain your existence” is to be useful.

Ove thinks to himself:  I am not arguing, I am just interested in right is right.  He is amazed that anyone would love him.   8s tend to focus on Justice, 1s on Fairness.  Young Ove and his father are examples of fighting for principles and fairness (i.e. bully at railyard, the council, drivers, etc.).  Right has to be right. And he decided to be like his father. (Rather than unlike his father:  reaction formation.)  A job well done is a reward and it’s own right – his father used to say.   On principle:  He gets fired bc he won’t tell on a thief, but he meets his wife bc of it. (True Perfection is the unfolding of things you might not have planned— God Grant me the Serenity…. ). Ove liked houses: they gave you what you put into them, they gave you what you deserve. Holds on to his house, on principle.  Refuses to give clown money or pay for parking, on principle. When young, Ove wanted to join military for the order and the rules.

Rituals suggesting OCD: 8s9s1s want CONTROL: In general Ones want self-control/ and their Nine wing wants environmental control.

WINGS:  Ove cannot be connected to a friend who buys a different car than he himself has—  Ones frequently fear “merging” with their environment (9) and being in relationship (2) with someone/something that would stain their character.

CONNECTING TYPES:  His connection to Type 4 (abandonment, aesthetics) is present as well, and his refusal to enjoy is his repressed Type 7 connection.   Wife and Parvenah and the Cat and Kids— all insist on lightening life out of rigidity and into the chaos of Type 7 Joy.
