This page is an offering of extra information while you consider Type Four Shadow Content through these two films: the biopic of Rachel Dolezal and Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. This below is from author Judith Searle on 4s in Literature.
• The Four protagonist is driven by a need to focus on his deep and authentic feelings.
• The Four protagonist is self-aware, self-absorbed, passionate, and unhappy.
• The Four protagonist is dominated by his feelings and driven to express them in love and/or art.
• The Four protagonist is comfortable with longing and seeks to maneuver his life situation so as to perpetuate this state.
• The Four protagonist is uncomfortable with lengthy periods of contentment or love affairs that threaten to end happily.
• Four stories generally have unhappy endings involving loss and/or death.
• The Four protagonist is the most likely of all Enneagram types to commit suicide over love.
From the beginning of the movie you are unsure: Are you seeing through Jasmine’s lens or another?
“She couldn’t stop babbling about her life” - self- referent, narcissism.
Self referencing, bragging, classist, drama queen who cannot breathe and is disappointed at her own arrival.
An inner and outer “class” clash goes on in Fours: author Tom Condon says that they believe they are “descended royalty. “ I concur from the 13th Floor! Finally back to the top where I belong…."
Jasmine is broke but flew first class with Louis Vuitton. SP Reckless Dauntless- wants to be interior designer, love of beauty.
Jasmine’s “Romantic” view of her own life keeps her ignorant of husband’s affair, in a high class lifestyle feeling better than everyone else. When it’s gone and she is in Reality, she is reckless and dauntless to recreate it at any cost. Reckless/Dauntless is the name for the self-preservation Four. The sexual Four is Competitive and the social Four is the instinct that most complains about feeling misunderstood in groups. I see plenty of self-preservation and sexual four in Jasmine.
Jasmine dishes her sister’s choices on men and tells her classmate she wants someone “substantial.”
“This city is so European… Have you traveled abroad? We used to go...”. In her own mind, she is externally bragging to her sister and her friends. She is a bit tight and irritated at the disorder (Type 1) in apartment and life. She believes that she is worthy of more (Type 2 Pride).
Jasmine has failure and reinvents her identity w little lies and omissions (3 wing).
Bobby Canavale says of Jasmine “She’s a phony (Deceit Type 3) and didn’t care about you until she needed something (Stingy Type 5).”
Jasmine after finding Peter Skaarsgard’s character: “But that’s all history, boys; I met someone. I’m a new person.” The reinvention of herself (Type 3), to be back where she belongs (Type 2 Pride), and she doesn’t need anyone now (Type 5 Isolation).
Everyone in the movie is working a romantic fantasy: Jasmine, her new boyfriend, Jasmine’s sister, the soundman... all living in fantasy worlds.
My thought: Bobby Canavale (Sallie Hawkins’s boyfriend: crying, heartbroken, deeply in love, working to save relationship, betrayed yet in love) is the TRUE romantic in the movie!
We find out it was Jasmine who (in sexual-4-like-vengeance for affairs ) reports her husband to FBI.
Who *does* somebody gotta fuck to get a Stoli Martini with a Twist of Lemon? :)
This Type Four Train Wreck is complete when she leaves reality to spend more time talking to herself in an imaginary romantic memory world on the street.
Questions for your consideration:
How did you handle your identity formation?
What went well? What did not go so well?
How have you gone about getting attention in life?
What role does envy play in your life?
How do you "introject" former experiences from your life?
How have you dealt with leaving old environs to answer your call to be something new?
What are your responses to the high and low sides of Type Four and Identity Types?
What have you done for a Stoli Martini with a Twist of Lemon?
What similarities and differences do you see between Jasmine and Rachel?
