Flying Easier with Both Your Wings
Saturday February 22nd 9:30am - 3:30pm in NW Portland (In-Person Event)
Understanding Your Type: Resolution and Balancing of the Tensions Between Both Wings
If you only had one wing, you'd be flying around in circles.
These days a lot of Enneagram teachers discount the theory of The Wings, saying it is outdated or unimportant. I believe there is still great practical wisdom in exploring your own type as a combination of two attention habits and a resolution of the tensions between both types next to you. Not only can the study teach you about your own inner habits, goals, challenges, intentions; but it can also teach you a lot about the resources available from all the other types--- especially the ones just next to you.

I know as an Enneagram Type 4 that if most folks were to have met me in my 20s, they would have thought of me as a Type 3 because of my learned extroverted gregariousness and competitive success in the nonprofit sector; what remained hidden from most was a natural introverted reticent bookish Type 5 wing that enjoyed being alone on weekends to read novels and cook. This could be the reason I have chased Type 5s my entire life and finally got one! As I've aged, I have befriended my Type 5 side and it has become more dominant, even publicly. Might we Fours often swing (daily/monthly/seasonally/yearly?) between being in our interior lives for too long (Type 5) and then want to come out and broadcast what we've learned in there (Type 3), and then find the need to go back in again? Rinse/repeat. When I think about the goal or experience of Equanimity for Type 4, it seems wise to get my inner Type 3 and Type 5 to befriend and trust one another while I stay in the driver's seat.
I see Type 6s doing something similar between their highly interior-focused Type 5 Wing and their highly exterior-focused Type 7 Wing: I mean, with all that inside, what's a Type 6 to think/feel/do ?!?
I suspect if you look at your own wings as partners who could use some better negotiating skills to bring out their and your best, you'll find something very similar. For example, if you're a Type 9, it's very worthwhile to explore yourself and your patterns as someone who is wrestling between a "no-edit!" external force of Type 8 and a "please-edit!" internal force of Type 1; but does Type 9 dulling and dampening these forces really resolve it?
That is a reason to really listen to one another and to build a vocabulary about what these three type-foci are all about, and to explore the high sides that can bring us resolutions, more ease and freedom.
