Wit: Things to notice when watching the film through the lens of The Idealist...

When being given a diagnosis, Vivian Bearing correctly defines “insidious” for the doctor.

Both agree they are thorough with their students, who they agree are not.

The doc mentions her participation in the treatment will be useful to common research knowledge.

The expectation is that she is tough enough to take always the full amount of chemo.

She is specialist in John Donne’s Sonnets and 17th Century Literature: she is tough.

Flashback shows her teacher challenging her lax standards in editions for the reading of “metaphysical poetry” … she warmly smiles at the memory of criticism from her teacher.  She admits she hid from college life, and preferred the library.

She admits she is a doctor of philosophy, a Donne scholar, has made a contribution to her field, and is “a force.”  Offering “able assistance” and currently “contribution to knowledge”.  She is willing to do full chemo dosages in order *to be useful*…

When asked in intake what do you do for exercise, she says “Pace.”  Young incompetent doctor that she handles with shock and grace, later calling it “degrading”… humiliating.

“Death Be Not Proud…””though thou not be.”

She has a memory of her father teaching her words, and they agree boring conversation is **soporific.**

“My only defense is the acquisition of vocabulary.”

I don’t mean to complain, but I am becoming very sick, ultimately sick… In everything I have done I have been steadfast, resolute, some would say in the extreme…”  full dose, celebrity…

The young doctor’s lack of human care while Vivian needs it shows her own preferences for research over humanity in life… and her rigid standards and relating with students.

She occludes the iv to get some attn/care from the nurse. It’s a warm scene.

In pondering that it is Her death and not Death in the abstract about which she has been speaking with the nurse :
“Now is not the time for verbal swordplay; now is the time for simplicity, now is the time for, dare I say it, kindness… I thought that being extremely smart would take care of it. But I see I have been found out.“

With laughter at the error of misunderstanding soporific, she says “I’m a teacher.”

“Not a word out of place, but a lot of students hated her.” Young doc says.  In dnr scene he screams “I made a mistake.” And he is criticized for being just a resident.
