The Nine Types of Men in Film
9 Men,10 Times Online
Monday Evenings 6:30-8:30pm Pacific
March 3rd thru May 5th 2025
Explore the ways that men develop character and values. Enjoy the freedom that comes with this study being shared just amongst other men. Together we find how all types of men can teach us something about how to become a greater man, more fully human, more fully ourselves.
Each ennea-type’s focus and dynamics may provide insights on what supports or thwarts our own development as men. We can find benefit not only in being in right measure with our own way but also in learning the ways of men who lead with other values, teaching us a broader version of how to be a more resourceful modern man today.

Deep learning and change happens over time and in continuous community. Discover the universal themes accessible and applicable to us all on the journey of being men. Expand your community of friends who talk type, character development, arts, literature, men and modern masculinity. This is a course on The Humanities and Being a Man, using the Nine Types as its foundation and direction.
These are small group explorations (9 Men, 10 Times) on themes found amongst the Nine Types, using specific films to enhance our understanding of ourselves and others as men. The film may offer a character who generally exemplifies an Enneagram Type, or it may explore themes that relate to an Enneagram Type's area of attention, motivations and life themes, vice to virtue conversion, or paths to disintegration and development. Because we have all points of view available to us, most participants each month have found something relevant, moving and meaningful to address in their own lives. The map of the Enneagram and good art can help us gain deeper understanding of universal life themes and meaningful existence. Of special interest to this group will be discussions on how our type may help or hinder being our best man, how did our environments engage with our styles, and how might other ways of being a man help us as we grow and change.
Men from all walks of life are found and welcomed here, and you will find a diversity of men's life experiences represented in the films as well. Fathers, sons, brothers, partners, lovers, husbands, friends, mentors, sages, seniors, students; all are found and welcomed in our films and in our community... and some of the groups continue to meet together for another season or more.

Dale Rhodes is a seasoned teacher who has had some solid mentors in his life, seen here with his dad, one of the most important Type Six figures in his life. His two recent online "Men's Enneagram" series and four online "Men in Literature & Film" courses sparked a few continuing men's groups. He finds that when exploring growth and change, men generally benefit from just being together-- and they benefit from wearing hats when in the sun.

What makes these groups work so well?
After 9 years, it's a tried and true method.
At Home in your Nest: On your own, review Dale's brief written notes on the film and a handout on the type of the evening. Arrange to view the chosen films on your own. A few prepared questions are available for your self-reflection and discussions. Having an Enneagram text is helpful too. All from the comfort of your home.
At class sessions, a brief minute hello is offered just to support group members knowing one another better. Then Dale provides a short teaching on the type; including music, poetry, video clips, humor. We have 30-40 minutes for those who wish to share initial reflections without interactive dialogue; we take a short break, and afterwards we move into open dialogue. There is plenty of time for reflections, reactions, questions and deeper delving amongst the participants. All groups occur online and are never recorded.

You use whatever medium keeps you engaged in the class, books or films. No one misses class for not having completed the book or the movie; your presence, listening and especially curiosity are always welcome! This course assumes general familiarity with the Enneagram system and a willingness to learn a little more.
Class time is focused not just on the type of the night, but moreso on how the film relates to us all-- and to all other (boys who have become) men as well.
Participants might have one Enneagram text to refer to before reading the selection of the month. Good choices are:
William Schafer's Roaming Free Inside the Cage: A Daoist Approach to the Enneagram and Spiritual Transformation and
Jerome Wagner's Nine Lenses on the World: The Enneagram Perspective

That is part of the beauty of all literature...
You discover that your longings are universal longings,
that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone.
You belong. (F. Scott Fitzgerald)

" It was over a decade ago that I first discovered the gift of the Enneagram.
Since then I have attended a few additional workshops and evening events that Dale has offered and always found them engaging and insightful. As both a pastor and a psychiatric RN, I have made use of the Enneagram in helping me understand both the people I serve and, more importantly, why I respond to them as I do. Most recently I took Dale's 9 Types in Literature and Film. This was an excellent means by which to engage with the Enneagram in a new light and was especially helpful in that it allowed those with deep experience and those fairly new to the study a common platform through which to engage. Dale's management of both the literary material and various viewpoints of the participants was masterful. I would certainly encourage any who have a passion for reading and an interest in knowing themselves and their loved ones to take this program. " - Tim Winslea
I am glad to be part of your community. I am really enjoying and benefiting from the time. I appreciate your wisdom, insight and unique lens on to each of the Types. As a lifelong student of how archetypes are and have been represented in the arts, I find your knowledge and contributions to be fantastic! Thanks… - David Widup
