Exploring the Ways Men Develop Character and Values
The Nine Types of Men in Literature, Film and Community:
Learning from one another the methods that we may use to be our best man.
Experiencing how all the types can show us how we may each be more fully hu-man.
Each type’s dynamics may have wisdom on how those values support or thwart our own development as men. We may find the benefits of being in right measure with our own way and the ways of other men:
Being in good humor and integrity (1 Idealist)
Being kind and humble (2 Connector)
Being effective and truthful (3 Performer)
Being sensitive to all and authentic (4 Romantic)
Being wise in experience and accessible (5 Observer)
Being consciously loyal and courageous (6 Loyalist)
Being accepting, patient and expansive (7 Epicure)
Being vulnerable, strong and magnanimous (8 Protector)
Being empathic, directed and directive (9 Mediator)

Discover the universal themes accessible and applicable to us all on the journey. Expand your community of friends who talk type, character development, arts and literature, men and modern masculinity.
The Enneagram is a map to universal inner and outer territories. While we often gravitate to certain regions, we visit them all daily throughout our lives. Join this program to find and experience where the map is leading you; all through an exploration of amazing characters and meaningful themes in great film and literature. This is a course on The Humanities and Being a Man, using the Enneagram as its foundation and direction. Deep learning and change happens over time and in continuous community. We hope you'll join for this and all the other benefits.
This program explores the themes described in the Nine Points of View, along with novels or films each month. These are small group explorations (9 people, 9 times) on the Nine Types in Depth, using specific literature and film to enhance our understanding of ourselves and others as men. The book or movie may offer a character who generally exemplifies an Enneagram Type, or it may explore themes that relate to an Enneagram Type's area of attention, motivations and life themes, vice to virtue conversion, or paths to disintegration and development. Because we have all points of view available to us, most participants each month have found something relevant, moving and meaningful to address in their own lives. The map of the Enneagram and good art provides the entry to examining deeper issues and themes. Of special interest to this group will be discussions on how our type may help or hinder being our best man, and if other ways of being may be accessible to us more easily.
(Instinctual Arena) Self-Preservation: Each month on your own, you will review a type chapter in an Enneagram text of your choice, along with handouts on a specific type and the novel/film; and you will arrange to read the chosen book and/or view the chosen film (often available for free in libraries or in streaming sites to which you are already subscribed). A few prepared questions are available for your self-reflection and your one-to-one discussions.
(Instinctual Arena) One-To-One Relating: You also commit to meeting with a different member each month at a time of your choosing in order to further explore content, reflections and responses to the class sessions. A schedule is created for this at the beginning of the term. This is a great interdisciplinary way to expand your understanding of the Nine Points of View in your own life. And it is a way to explore personality and humanities with people from different points of view. Most students say that this ends up being the most meaningful part of the year's experience. Because we connect through one-to-ones, we do not do a "check-in" during groups--- we get right to the content of the session.
(Instinctual Arena) Social Navigating: At group sessions, Dale Rhodes will provide a short teaching on the type of the month; including music, poetry, video clips of the nine types along with written resources on the instincts, wings, connecting points, etc. We have 30 minutes for those who may want to share reflections without crosstalk, we take a very short break, and afterwards we move into open dialogue. There is plenty of time for reflections, reactions, questions and deeper delving amongst the participants. All book groups occur online and we take a full 10 minute break.

Students may use whatever medium keeps them engaged in the class, books or films. No one should purposely miss class for not having completed the book or the movie; your presence, listening and especially curiosity are always welcome! This course assumes general familiarity with the Enneagram system, through experience or reading provided handouts and a type's chapter each month. Class time will be more focused on how the literature/film relates to us all, not just to the type of the month. Students might have one Enneagram text to refer to before reading the selection of the month. Recommended but not required:
